Protective Agency

Your own representative at a port where the nominated agent works for the other side.

On a charterer-nominated agency the agent is appointed and paid by the charterer. That is normal and usually fine, right up until owner and charterer interests diverge over laytime, cargo condition or a disbursement account nobody can explain.

A protective agent is the owner's own eyes at that port. We attend alongside the nominated agent, verify what is actually happening, check the disbursement account against what was delivered, and report to the owner rather than to the party paying the port bill.

We coordinate with the port authority, handle documentation and oversee cargo operations, but the distinction that matters is whose interest is being protected when the two do not align.

Appointment and briefing
Instructions taken from the owner, and the nominated agent, terminal and master notified of our role before arrival.

Attendance
Present through berthing, operations and departure, with an independent record of times and events kept throughout.

Account scrutiny
Proforma and final disbursement accounts checked line by line against services actually rendered, with queries raised before payment.

Reporting
Daily reports to the owner and a close-out covering times, disbursements, cargo condition and anything requiring follow-up.
