Pre-Purchase Survey

A full condition inspection before you commit, with the repair exposure quantified rather than described.

A vessel is bought on the strength of what the buyer knows at the moment of signing. Everything discovered afterwards is the buyer's problem, and on a second-hand purchase the gap between the asking price and the true cost of getting her trading is where the money is won or lost.

Our pre-purchase surveys cover structure, machinery, cargo gear, class and statutory records, and outstanding conditions of class. We report what the vessel actually needs, with an estimate of what it will cost and when it will fall due, so the finding can be used in the negotiation rather than filed after it.

We act for buyers, and where instructed we attend alongside the seller's representative so the findings are agreed on board rather than argued about later.

Applies to

  • Second-hand vessel acquisition
  • Bulk carriers, general cargo and multipurpose tonnage
  • Tugs, barges and offshore support vessels
  • Outstanding conditions of class review
  • Repair cost estimation for negotiation
  • Finance and mortgage inspections
Method

How we work

The same method at every port, so the report reads the same from one call to the next.

    Records review

Class and statutory certificates, survey status, outstanding conditions and recent repair history examined before boarding.

  2. 02

    Structural inspection

Hull, holds, tank tops, hatch covers and accessible spaces inspected, with attention to corrosion, cropping and previous repairs.

  3. 03

    Machinery and gear

Main and auxiliary machinery, cargo gear and safety equipment examined and operated where practicable.

  4. 04

    Costed report

Findings issued with photographs and an estimate of repair exposure and its timing, in a form usable in the negotiation.
