Crane Reliability Survey

Cargo gear examined and function-tested before it fails at the berth and stops the operation.

On most of the berths we cover the vessel works her own cargo, so a crane failure does not slow the operation down, it stops it. The vessel sits on demurrage while spares are flown in, and on this coast that is rarely a short wait.

A crane reliability survey examines the condition, function and safe working performance of the vessel's cargo gear before it is relied on. We check wires, sheaves, brakes, limit switches, hydraulics and structure, and function-test through the working range.

Charterers increasingly ask for this before fixing gear-dependent cargo. It is also the cheapest insurance an owner can buy against a crane failing at the one berth with no shore crane available.

Applies to

  • Vessel cranes, derricks and cargo gear
  • Pre-fixture gear inspection for charterers
  • Wire, sheave, brake and limit switch condition
  • Hydraulic system and structural checks
  • Function testing through the working range
  • Grabs, hooks and lifting accessories
Method

How we work

The same method at every port, so the report reads the same from one call to the next.

  1. 01

    Documentation check

Register of cargo gear, test certificates and maintenance records reviewed against what is actually fitted.

  2. 02

    Visual examination

Wires, sheaves, blocks, hooks, slew rings and pedestal structure examined for wear, deformation and corrosion.

  3. 03

    Function test

Hoist, luff, slew and brakes operated through the working range, with limit switches and safety devices proved.

  4. 04

    Report

Findings graded by urgency, separating what stops the crane working from what should be planned into the next maintenance window.
