Hull and Machinery Surveys

Damage and condition surveys on hull and machinery, for owners and for hull underwriters.

When something breaks, the question is quickly what caused it, what it costs, and whether the policy responds. Answering that credibly needs someone on board while the evidence is still there, not after the repair.

Marine Surveys Africa carries out hull and machinery damage and condition surveys for owners and for hull underwriters. We establish the extent of damage, the probable cause, the repair required and its reasonable cost, and we attend repairs where the interest being protected justifies it.

Contact damage, grounding, heavy weather, engine and auxiliary failures and cargo gear breakdowns are the usual work. The report is written to stand up to the other side's surveyor.

Applies to

  • Contact and berthing damage
  • Grounding and heavy weather damage
  • Main engine and auxiliary machinery failure
  • Cargo gear and crane failure
  • Hull underwriter instructed surveys
  • Repair specification and attendance
Method

How we work

The same method at every port, so the report reads the same from one call to the next.

  1. 01

    Prompt attendance

Surveyor on board as quickly as the port allows, while the damage is undisturbed and the crew's account is fresh.

  2. 02

    Extent and cause

Damage measured and photographed, and the probable cause established from the physical evidence and the vessel's records.

  3. 03

    Repair specification

Necessary repairs specified and separated from owner's work, with a reasonable cost and a view on whether it is class-affecting.

  4. 04

    Report and follow-up

Report issued to the instructing party, with attendance at repairs where the exposure justifies it.
