Tally Control During Loading and Unloading
Independent piece count through the operation, so what the documents say matches what actually crossed the rail.
Shortage claims on bagged and break bulk cargo are usually won or lost on the tally. If the only count is the terminal's, the receiver's claim and the ship's defence rest on the same disputed sheet.
Marine Surveys Africa provides independent tally through loading and discharge, counting each sling, unit or parcel, recording damage and remarks as they occur, and reconciling the running total against the manifest at the end of every shift rather than at the end of the operation.
The discipline matters more than the arithmetic: a discrepancy found and raised during the shift can still be resolved. The same discrepancy found a week later is a claim.
Applies to
- Bagged cargo: rice, sugar, cement, fertiliser
- Break bulk and general cargo
- Steel, pipe and project cargo
- Container tally and seal verification
- Damage and remark recording at the point of handling
- Shift-by-shift reconciliation against the manifest
How we work
The same method at every port, so the report reads the same from one call to the next.
- 01
Tally plan
Counting points agreed before the operation so every unit is counted once, with hatch and gang coverage set against the working plan.
- 02
Continuous count
Tallymen on each working hatch throughout, recording units, marks and any damage as it is handled rather than afterwards.
- 03
Shift reconciliation
Running totals reconciled against the manifest at the end of every shift, and discrepancies raised while they can still be resolved.
- 04
Final statement
Outturn report issued with the tally sheets, damage record and any remarks supporting a letter of protest.
