Condition Assessment Survey

An independent view of a vessel's real condition, for owners, charterers, underwriters and P and I.

Charterers vet tonnage before they fix it and underwriters before they insure it. A condition assessment gives both a documented, independent view of structure, machinery and safety systems, rather than relying on the certificates alone.

We report seaworthiness, compliance against the standards the vessel is trading to, and the maintenance that is genuinely outstanding as opposed to merely scheduled. Where the survey is being used to satisfy a charterer or an underwriter, we write it so it answers the question they actually asked.

The same survey is often the cheapest way for an owner to find out what a vetting inspection is about to say, in time to do something about it.

Applies to

  • Charterer vetting and approval
  • Underwriter and P and I condition requirements
  • Pre-fixture inspection
  • Structural integrity and machinery assessment
  • Safety systems and certification review
  • Layup entry and reactivation
Method

How we work

The same method at every port, so the report reads the same from one call to the next.

  1. 01

    Scope agreement

Scope set against whoever the report is for, since a charterer, an underwriter and an owner are each asking a different question.

  2. 02

    Structure and spaces

Hull, holds, ballast tanks and accessible spaces inspected, with corrosion, coating condition and past repairs recorded.

  3. 03

    Machinery and safety

Main and auxiliary machinery, steering, mooring and life-saving and fire-fighting appliances examined and function-tested.

  4. 04

    Findings and recommendations

Report issued with photographs, graded findings and a clear separation between what must be done now and what can be planned.
